One person is dead after a fire early this morning broke out in an apartment building on Janesville’s northeast side.

Janesville Fire Battalion Chief Ryan Murphy tells Big Radio the fire broke out around 6:30 a.m. today in apartments on the 1300 block of North Randall Avenue. And while firefighters were able to knock down the fire in a few minutes, and contain it to one of 8 apartment units, the blaze killed one male occupant.

He’s not been identified, but Murphy says a second person was in the apartment. They got out on their own, but they’ve been hospitalized.

The fire’s under investigation by Janesville Fire Department, Janesville police and the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigations.

Murphy says that’s standard in a large-scale fire that kills someone. He says there’s no immediate indications that the fire is suspicious.

Officials haven’t released a possible cause, but it started in the living room of an apartment unit.

Murphy says as of this afternoon, all other residents who live in the apartment were being allowed back in to stay. The fire and the damage was limited to the unit where it started.

Murphy says the medical examiner’s office will release further information pending an ongoing investigation.
