Janesville police and school officials are keeping quiet about a major police presence that prompted a school lock down on the west side on Wednesday.

Janesville Police haven’t responded to media inquiries for details on the incident,  but a school spokesperson says Washington School went on a brief lock down late Wednesday morning. The lock down had been lifted by about 12:30 this afternoon.

The school spokesperson says he was unaware of the nature of the incident, other than he believes it occurred near school grounds. He said the district no longer refers to such incidents as school “lock downs,” and instead now refers to them as a “service holds.”

Police haven’t announced exactly what they were dealing with near the school Wednesday, but said in a brief alert that it was an “active investigation” north and west of Memorial Drive and North Washington Street and that people should stay away from the area. Police say they don’t think the public is currently at risk.

One resident reached out to Big Radio in the late afternoon, saying they were concerned authorities and the school district had not passed along details of the incident.

Big Radio will continue tracking this incident.
