Police have arrested a 23-year-old Janesville man in what they say is the murder of a Janesville woman.
Janesville police say Logan Barclay is in custody on suspicion he killed a 22-year-old local woman. A person out walking Wednesday says they found the woman dead along Peace Trail, a hiking and biking trail on the city’s south side.
They say the body was found in a heavily wooded stretch of the trail near Hanover and Afton Roads.
Details haven’t emerged, but police say Barclay is suspected of killing a woman he knew and had a relationship with earlier. The pair have a child together, police say.
Police arrested Barclay on Thursday after launching an investigation into the discovery of the body.
Janesville Police Lt. Detective Jennifer Seeger says a search warrant of Barclay’s Janesville home Thursday turned up evidence police say connects him to the woman’s death. He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree intentional homicide.
Barclay and the woman apparently had lived together at some point, but police say a domestic relationship between Barclay and the woman at some point had “soured.”
The woman’s family did not report her missing. Police say a friend of the woman helped police identify Barclay as a suspect.
Police believe the killing happened “outside Barclay’s home,” but it’s not clear where.
Police haven’t said when they think the killing happened, and they haven’t released details on how the woman may have died, pending a medical examiner’s investigation.
Police say neither the woman nor Barclay have a past criminal history, and neither had any significant past contacts with police.
Barclay’s being held at the Rock County Jail on suspicion of first-degree intentional homicide.
