Beloit police say they’ve arrested a 16-year-old juvenile in the apparent shooting homicide of a 20-year-old Beloit man that happened April 5.
Police say the arrest came after a two separate raids Thursday on homes at the 1300 block of Yates Avenue, Beloit, and at the 600 block of South Main Street in Janesville.
Beloit police say during the raids, they found and arrested an unidentified 16-year-old.
A week after the shooting, police still have not named the man who died, and they haven’t given details of his death.
Initially, police withheld the victim’s name citing Marsy’s law, a federal rule that aims to retain victim privacy pending notification of next of kin, and to protect family members of people murdered in cases in which a person suspected of killing them remains at large.
Now, with the juvenile suspected of the killing in custody, it’s not clear why police continue to withhold the victim’s identity.
Police have not said whether they suspect more than one person in the killing.
Police have said they responded to the 1400 block of Beloit’s Nelson Avenue about 1:30 a.m. April 5 in the city’s Merrill Neighborhood for a call of a person with gunshot injuries. They say emergency responders were unable to save the life of a 20-year-old man at the scene who police say had mortal injuries.
Beloit Police Chief Andre Sayles calls officers and other authorities involved in the shooting murder investigation “guardians,” saying they’ll work hard to make sure “those responsible for this loss of life are brought to justice.”
