A Janesville official heads to Madison to voice the city’s opposition to a senate bill that would establish requirements compelling a municipality to extend water and sewer services outside their corporate limits.

Deputy City Manager Ryan McCue says bill 691 would unquestionably create a circumstance where Janesville residents subsidize the development of utility infrastructure to services and town residents.

McCue says a city like Janesville must be able to assign its own water and sewer resources to attract and retain businesses and the bill would have a negative impact on economic development.

A public hearing on the bill was held by the Senate Committee on Transportation and Local Government Wednesday.
