The theme for 2023 National Fire Prevention Week is “cooking safety starts with you.”

The Janesville Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association to celebration fire prevention week October 8th through the 14th.

Fire Inspector Bob Kessenich says engine crews will be visiting local elementary schools to teach fire prevention.

According to the NFPA, cooking remains the leading cause of 49 percent of all U.S. home fires.

The Janesville Fire Department reminds citizens to keep a close eye on what they are cooking, turn pot handles toward the back of the stove, and have a kid and pet-free zone at least three feet around anywhere hot food is being prepared.
