A 34-year-old former Beloit woman who plead guilty to neglecting a child, resulting in death gets a lighter sentence then the ex-boyfriend who actually killed the boy.

Judge Barbara McCrory sentenced Jessica Nelson on Thursday to seven years of probation and a year in the Rock County Jail.

Nelson is accused of leaving 59-day-old Amanii in the care of 36-year-old Deanthony Hodges in March of 2017 when the baby was assaulted so violently that a doctor compared it to being in a high-speed crash without a seat belt.

Nelson was also charged in the case due to the fact that Hodges had been accused of abusing her older children, and she told child protective services he would not be watching the new baby.

Hodges was sentenced to 11 years in prison after taking a plea deal last year.
