The Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin is going through a leadership change as it continues fundraising for its new facility.

Its board of directors announced Tuesday that executive director Mike McManus stepped down as of Monday, but the board did not say why. He had been on leave since early July.

Assistant executive director Jim Hurley said the board did not name an official interim executive director, but he has served in that role in the past and plans to guide the organization with his more than two decades of experience.

The humane society will continue its capital campaign to build a new shelter on Prairie Avenue between Janesville and Beloit.

Hurley said the COVID-19 pandemic slowed down their fundraising, and they still have a little over $1 million to raise.

The board plans to conduct a search for a new executive director “in a timely manner.”
