The state Department of Criminal Investigation says a Janesville police officer is on administrative leave pending a probe into an officer-involved shooting on Janesville’s near-north side Friday night. Police say the incident left one person dead.

The DCI said in a release early Saturday that a Janesville police officer shot a person who police say was armed and blockaded inside a house at the 1200 block of North Parker Drive, with two other people inside.

The DCI says Janesville police entered the house because the two people were blockaded inside. The agency says a Janesville officer was in the house when they shot and killed the armed person.

The person died on scene, and police say they recovered a gun in the house.

The officer who shot the person was wearing a police body camera during the incident, the DCI says. No officers were hurt.

The officer who shot the person is on administrative leave, which is standard protocol in police-involved shootings. The DCI has agents in crime response and digital evidence involved in the investigation as authorities work to piece together what happened.

The agency says it will forward investigative reports to the Rock County District Attorney’s office when it completes the investigation.

Janesville police said in a release the incident happened at about 10 p.m. Friday night. The department has declined to give more details.

“Our thoughts are with our officers and those within our community who are impacted by an officer-involved shooting,” Janesville police said in a written statement released Saturday morning alongside the DCI’s briefing.

The DCI says officers in the incident are being fully cooperative with the investigation.
