A longtime Janesville banker with a history of spearheading public-private revitalization intends to run for Janesville City Council.

East side resident Larry Squire has joined the list of candidates who’ve filed to run for three open seats on the council in April.

A city inventory shows Squire joins a growing field of candidates including incumbent council members Aaron Burdick and Paul Williams, along with south-side residents Josh Erdman, Mathew Gonzalez and Billy McCoy.

Squire served as a private-side booster of the ARISE riverfront redevelopment, and he’s been involved with a friends group that has raised private funding for the planned Woodman’s Sports and Convention Center.

Council president Paul Benson’s seat also comes open in April. As of midweek, Benson had not publicly signaled whether he’ll seek re-election.
