Big changes are coming to the main drag on Janesville’s west side in 2025.

Assistant City Engineer Ahna Bizjac says the public’s invited next week to a city of Janesville open house to share details of a planned, $7-million dollar rebuild of West Court Street.

That’s a total resurfacing and safety redesign of West Court from the Five Points to the far west edge of Janesville. That stretch is also known as the city’s Westgate commercial corridor.

The work’s slated to start in the spring of 2024.

The project converts stretch from a divided four lane to two lanes with improved left turn lanes at intersections and upgraded traffic lights.

The lane reconfiguration makes room for bike lanes, but Bizjac calls those a “secondary” part of the plan that’s more geared to improve intersections and reduce crashes on the street.

The stretch gets about 10,500 vehicles a day.

Bizjac says state highway safety funding pays for $4 million of the project. The city will shoulder the other $3 million.

The open house is 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. next Wednesday at Janesville City Hall.
