The Janesville Fire Department works to make sure the community know there are options to relinquish newborn babies safely.

This comes after a newborn baby boy was found dead in a box in a field in Whitewater early last month. The 39-year-old mother of the boy has been charged.

Deputy chief Jamie Kessenich says fire stations serve as safe havens for not only newborn babies, but during severed weather events or anyone who feels in danger or threatened in any way.

Kessenich says all five of the City’s fire stations are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
