Janesville Fire Department is fighting a house fire that broke out this afternoon in Janesville’s Courthouse Hill neighborhood.
Dozens of Janesville firefighters were actively battling what appeared to be an attic fire that broke out around 2 p.m. in a three-story brick home at 319 S. Wisconsin Street.
A fire department battalion chief on scene was not immediately able to give information on the fire, but a neighbor a few doors north said the house on fire is a single-family home, and it appeared residents had evacuated safely and were uninjured.
Smoke damage was visible around the home’s third-floor windows, where firefighters had used hoses to put water on the fire. At about 2:20 p.m. Friday, the house still had smoke drifting from the roof eaves and from a chimney, and firefighters were going in and out of the house.
It’s not clear what started the blaze, but authorities had blocked off a one-block stretch of South Wisconsin Street between Holmes Street and Oakland Avenue.
