Beloit’s top cop addresses immigration enforcement concerns that have arisen at city council meetings as the White House is about to change hands.

Police Chief Andre Sayles says the department will not ask people about their immigration status or for any immigration documentation during routine police interactions.

The department says such things as filing a police report or reporting a crime are not contingent on citizenship or immigration status.

Sayles says immigration enforcement is a federal function and that BPD will work on federal enforcement requests only in specific circumstances.

These include cases involving people suspected of terrorism or espionage, people suspected of being involved with a criminal street gang, people arrested for violent felonies and people who are previously deported felons with an independent basis for a new arrest.
