Fire officials want you to make like Santa and check all your potential fire risks twice this holiday season.

Those risks start with your natural Christmas tree if you have one in your home. Janesville Fire Marshal Nate Simmons says natural trees should be watered daily to keep them green and limit fire danger.

The second major fire risk is electrical. Simmons says plugging a lot of lights into a single outlet can pose a danger. If you’re triggering a circuit breaker, that’s a sign to rearrange your setup. Space heaters also can start fires, especially if the area around them is not kept clear.

Finally, Simmons says to use common sense if fried turkey is going to be part of that holiday dinner. That includes not dropping in a frozen or partially frozen bird and setting up the fryer outside and a safe distance from a structure.

It’s also a good time to make sure the smoke detectors inside your home are in good working order if you haven’t checked them lately.

A house fire in Madison that made the news Friday night further underscored the need for fire caution.
