Milton enacts an ordinance limiting where registered sex offenders may live.
The common council unanimously approved the ordinance Tuesday night. Offenders on the state registry now may not live within 1,200 feet of such places as public parks, pools, libraries, schools and others.
The new measure also addresses loitering of registered offenders at such locations.
The first-offense fine for violations of the new ordinance is $1,006; subsequent fines would be $2,083.
Residency enforcement would involve the police chief referring a potential violation to the city attorney, who would seek a court order to prevent a registered offender from living in a restricted area.
Janesville and Beloit do not have municipal restrictions like the one Milton approved.
