The city of Janesville and Rock County are set to swap a road for a road.

Under a resolution the county board will consider Thursday, the city would take control of a half-mile stretch of Beloit Avenue/County G immediately north of Highway 11.

In exchange, the county would take over a stretch of Afton Road/County D from the Bellrichard Bridge to Rockport Road that the city is currently responsible for.

The swap would create natural stopping points for road work and services for both municipalities.

For example, under current jurisdictional borders, an upcoming city project to rehab Beloit Avenue south from Kellogg Avenue would have to stop at an awkward point in the road north of Venture Drive. The transfer will allow that work to be completed all the way to Highway 11.

The county’s Public Works Committee OK’d the proposal (Tuesday).
