Authorities say during a routine security check at the Rock County Jail in Janesville on Saturday night, a correctional officer found a 30-year-old Beloit man hanging in a cell where he was the only occupant. The sheriff’s office did not identify him.

Jail medical staff and Janesville paramedics tried to revive the man but couldn’t.

The medical examiner and sheriff’s office detectives are investigating the death. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday. The state Department of Corrections will review the investigation.

The man was taken into custody in April on criminal charges and a probation violation.

The death comes after a separate suicide attempt reported at the jail last Tuesday in which an inmate “intentionally fell” from a balcony. That person did not die but suffered serious injuries.
