The seventh human case of West Nile virus in Wisconsin this year is a Rock County resident.
The Rock County Public Health Department reported the case Friday; Walworth County health officials also reported a West Nile case in a horse Friday afternoon, indicating virus-carrying mosquitoes were active there.
Most people infected, about 80%, do not get sick. Symptoms such as fever, headache and fatigue are typically mild. Less than 1% of people can develop severe symptoms like high fever, disorientation and coma.
Health authorities recommend limiting exposure risk by using insect repellent; avoiding outdoor activities during the evening or early morning hours when mosquitoes are most active; and wearing loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors.
Other mosquito-proofing steps include checking window and door seams and removing standing water where mosquitoes can breed.
