A 37-year-old Beloit man is accused of drunkenly speeding through a barricade during Beloit’s 4th of July fireworks, nearly injuring several children.

According to the criminal complaint Anthony Benson was driving a 1964 Impala when he struck a barricade at Eclipse Center Street and Eclipse Boulevard.

The barricade flew into a child who miraculously, wasn’t injured. Witnesses on scene detained Benson until Beloit Police arrived.

Beloit Police say Benson admitted to having a lot to drink that night, and refused to submit to field sobriety testing. He also admitted to having a shotgun in the vehicle.

Benson made his initial appearance in Rock County Court this week where cash bond was set at $500 on a single charge of first-degree recklessly endangering safety.
