The American Red Cross is stepping in after close to two dozen families lose their homes in a massive apartment fire Monday.

Spokesperson Laura McGuire says so far they are providing assistance to seven families.

The Janesville Fire department says the blaze on the 2600 block of East Racine Street caused close to $1.5 million in damage to the building and nearly $400,000 in damage to the contents. The building is considered a total loss.

None of the residents were hurt, however one firefighter did receive minor injuries.
