More solar could pop up on Rock County’s east end …1,000 acres worth.
Town of Harmony chairman Jeff Klenz says a proposed solar farm would stretch across dozens of farms from north of Emerald Grove in the town of Harmony to the town of La Prairie.
Klenz says some town officials at first opposed the solar farm because they feared it would idle swaths of farmland for years and require removal of some of the area’s most fertile topsoil.
But Klenz says Developer Dawn Harvest has agreed to leave all of Rock Prairie’s topsoil in place, and it would some continued agricultural use of the solar farm acreage.
He says the solar farm would bring the town between $80,000 to $100,000 a year in revenue shared by the farm’s operator. The town of La Prairie and Rock County also would see payouts from the solar farm.
The proposal now moves into a months-long public comment period. The state’s Public Service Commission will likely decide whether to allow the solar farm by spring of 2025.
