The 40-year-old Beloit woman accused of trying to kill a man with her car after he cursed at her for backing into his SUV pleads not guilty by reason of mental defect or disease.

Lynell Betts appeared in Rock County Court last week where she waived her right to a preliminary hearing on charges of attempted second-degree intentional homicide, first degree recklessly endangering safety, OWI, and bail jumping.

According to the criminal complaint Betts was intoxicated on gin when she struck an SUV with her car as she backed out of a driveway in Beloit.

Betts then turned around and tried to hit the man with her car, then rammed his SUV.

Police think Betts searched for the man until she found his SUV at a gas station. The clerk said the man was inside buying cigarettes when Betts peeled in and purposely sideswiped his SUV.

The man ran out and threw a bottle of juice at Betts’s car and hustled for his SUV with Betts bearing down on him.

Police found Betts later with her car smashed and hand prints all over the hood.
