A guitar-string maker and international recycling company are teaming up to keep musical instruments strings out of landfills.

TerraCycle Senior Director of Brand Partnerships Gina Herrera says the metal strings are smelted into new alloys, while the nylon strings are recycled for industrial plastic applications.

Knapton Musik Knotes in Janesville is hosting a free Playback event on Saturday from 2:00 until 4:00 where people can get their instruments professionally restrung while their old strings are recycled for free.

To date, the Playback program has recycled nearly 13 million strings since first launching in 2016.
