The Janesville City Council appears poised to add another level of oversight to Alcohol License Advisory Committee decisions.

Under a proposed ordinance, temporary special event Class B alcohol beverage licenses approved by the ALAC or police chief would automatically go before the Janesville City Council at their next meeting.

City Council and ALAC member Paul Williams says it would go on the consent agenda which gives council members the option to discuss it if they choose.

Currently the City Clerk can issue these licenses the day after the ALAC approval even though the City Council still has the authority to review that decision.

The Rock County 4-H Fair was recently granted a temporary Class B license, which was then put in jeopardy when City Council decided to review it. Ultimately the City Council stuck with the ALAC’s decision.

The City Council is expected to set a public hearing for the proposed ordinance when they meet Monday night.
