The Rock County Sheriff’s Office has identified 53-year-old John Diggles as the man police say they arrested after he shot a gun and holed up inside a Milton apartment for six hours Wednesday night.

According to a release, police suspect Diggles of shooting a gun once inside the apartment at 33 Northside Drive at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Capt. Caleb Beutin says police are still investigating the matter, but they think a bullet from the reported gunshot went through a wall of one apartment and entered another unit.

Nobody was injured.

Beutin says a police hostage and crisis negotiation team responded alongside a Rock County sheriff’s tactical team.

A person police suspected to be a hostage in the incident was found safe in another apartment.

Milton Police and sheriff’s authorities repeatedly tried to contact Diggles from outside the apartment but he didn’t answer.

Police went in with a search warrant and used a SWAT team to enter Diggles’ apartment, but he wasn’t there. Instead, the team found Diggles in a storage room in the apartments. He was taken into custody about 1:11 a.m. Thursday, after six hours of police trying to prompt him out of the apartments.

Beutin declined to say whether police recovered a gun.

Police say they brought in Rock County’s Bearcat armored vehicle, and and Beloit police brought in an incident command trailer.

Diggles is in custody on counts of recklessly endangering safety, possession with intent to deliver cannabis, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
