Green County Sheriff’s authorities say the man who shot himself dead in front of police in Monroe on Tuesday is from Janesville.

Authorities named 49-year-old Casey J. Austin of Janesville as the man who turned a gun on himself as Monroe police officers pulled over his car on Tuesday afternoon.

They’d stopped Austin on suspicion he’d robbed Orfordville’s Dollar General store earlier Tuesday.

Austin’s name was released after an investigation by the Green County Sheriff’s Office.

Police say he’d pulled a gun on a clerk at Dollar General before fleeing in a silver car.

Authorities say he waved a handgun at Monroe police who’d stopped his car but then turned the gun on himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
