After a months long study at the intersection of Beloit Avenue and State Street in Janesville, the city council voted Monday night to replace the current traffic signals with new ones.
Council Member Paul Williams says the stop lights are the only way kids and adults can safely cross the street, and spending the money is worth it when it comes to potentially saving someone’s life.
Fellow Council Member Heather Miller says they’d be doing a disservice to the residents of the neighborhood and those who visit there by not putting up lights to allow for a safer intersection.
Replacing the lights with new ones will cost the city an estimated $500,000.
City Engineer Brad Reents had recommended replacing the lights with speed limit signs and new markers which would’ve cost roughly $25,000.
