A full rebuild of Milton’s West High Street could come with new traffic controls at a busy, adjacent crossroad.
On Monday, the Milton city council OK’d $355,000 in design work to fully resurface the asphalt-paved West High Street in its mile-and-a-half run across the city.
Milton Public Works Director Mark Langer says the actual rebuild is slated in 2026, but part of design work would be a study of the busy intersection at West High Street and East John Paul Road.
The intersection near Milton High School and the busy Schilberg Park could get stop lights or other traffic controls, depending on the findings. John Paul over the past decade has seen growing use a commuter route, and a consultant’s preliminary report to the city shows its possible the intersection could get flagged for lane modifications and traffic signals.
About 12,300 vehicles a day use the intersection, according to a state traffic count.
Mayor Anissa Welch didn’t mince words in saying she thinks the intersection could use a deeper look at traffic safety.
She called the busy nexus of West High Street and East John Paul “kind of a problem intersection.”
More than half the project’s $1.7 million dollar cost would be paid through a state grant.
It’s the first full rehab of East High Street since 2010. Langer says that w0rk was paid through the Obama administration’s 0mnibus infrastructure relief package, which came during the Great Recession.
