The Fort Atkinson City Council passes a resolution urging the State legislature and Governor to fix the broken system of funding critical local services.

City Manager Rebecca LeMire says currently local government is primarily funded through property taxes and state share revenue.

LeMire says several of the City’s contracted services such as garbage and recycling collection are tied to the increase in the consumer price index and rose more than the City’s allowable levy increase.

LeMire says Wisconsin does allow local governments to borrow funds outside the levy limit and seek voter approval for an increase in property taxes through referendum.

Fort Atkinson took both steps in 2022 however LeMire says neither is sustainable.
