State and local officials are investigating a suspicious death and residential fire that occurred Friday in Fort Atkinson.

According to a news release from the Department of Justice, first responders were dispatched to a residential fire in Fort Atkinson Friday morning and found heavy flames. An adult was found dead inside the home.

Investigators quickly learned that a two-year-old girl who live in the home was missing.

An AMBER alert was issued for the child who law enforcement believed was with 36-year-old Elizabeth M. Durkee, and she was recovered safely a short time later.

All of the individuals involved knew each other, and the incident remains under investigation.
