The Beloit Transit System is honoring Black History Month.

Director of Strategic Communications Sarah Lock says a seat on every bus will be reserved for Rosa Parks in the month of February.

Parks was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama, in December 1955 for refusing to give up her seat on a segregated bus to a white man. Parks’ arrest lead to a year-long boycott by Black riders of the transit system until the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that bus segregation was illegal. Known as the mother of the Civil Rights movement, Parks’ actions helped spur a movement to end racial segregation and Jim Crow Laws.

Riders will see the seats marked off to honor Parks when riding the bus throughout the month of February.
