The challenges of COVID-19 is delaying the retrial of a Janesville homicide case.

Rock County Judge Barbara McCrory decided Tuesday to delay the scheduled date of the second jury trial for 23-year-old Julian Collazo, who is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the 2017 stabbing death of Christine Scaccia-Lubeck.

McCrory declared a mistrial when a Rock County Jury could not reach a verdict in Collazo’s first trial last October.

Back in December, the court scheduled a second trial to begin July 20. During a status conference Tuesday over video chat, McCrory pushed back the trial date to now start September 14.

Collazo’s attorney Jeff Jensen filed a motion to have the court bring in a jury from another county, due to the high local exposure of the case.

McCrory said Rock County Court leaders are still crafting their plan for how jury trials will resume with proper physical distancing, and she was unsure how well the pandemic will allow her to fulfill Jensen’s request.

Assistant district attorney Scott Dirks told the judge he didn’t want this case to be the first trial under new rules, in case the court encounters unforeseen challenges.
