Opening arguments for a Beloit triple shooting case in Rock County Court shed light on the moments leading up to the death of a 21-year-old victim.

Assistant Attorney General Annie Jay told jurors Monday that 32-year-old Gregory Carter and 28-year-old Anthony Sims both started shooting following a street fight between high school kids in March of 2019.

Carter and Sims are both on trial for charges of first-degree recklessly endangering safety.

The shooting killed Treron White of Beloit, but neither man is charged with homicide because Jay said police do not know whose shots caused White’s death.

Carter’s attorney Jeff Purnell is arguing that the witnesses to the shooting are unreliable and the state lacks proof that Carter was present.

Sims’ attorney called the state’s argument “convoluted” and said the incident created confusion for everyone involved.

The jury is expected to issue a verdict by the end of the day Thursday.
