The Janesville school board will officially ask voters to approve a pair of referendums in November.

They voted unanimously to add a question to the ballot seeking a $37 million operations referendum and a $22.5 million facilities referendum.

The operations referendum would incrementally increase the tax bill on a $100,000 home by $40 each year over its four year lifespan starting at the end of 2021.

Chief Financial Officer Dan McCrea said this referendum is essential for the district to maintain its current services as enrollment and revenues decline while expenses rise.

The facilities referendum would increase the property taxes on a $100,000 home by a flat rate of $5 to fund general obligation bonds, also starting at the end of 2021.

This loan would pay for some of the district’s most pressing needs at its school buildings, including security and safety measures and outdated boiler systems.

A survey conducted by a district consultant last month showed the majority of respondents would support the referendums.
