Beloit Memorial High School seniors want to have some type of in-person graduation ceremony this summer, even if its a few months after the school year is over.

School District of Beloit Interim Superintendent Sue Green said graduation was originally scheduled for June 6, but Governor Tony Evers’ executive order closed school buildings and cancelled all school events through June 30.

Principal Emily Pelz formed a graduation committee at the high school to take student input on their options, and the seniors are hoping to have a face-to-face celebration when gatherings are allowed again.

Green said the district is working with a company to plan a virtual graduation ceremony, likely still on June 6, which would include pictures and segments for every graduate. It would still also have the regularly scheduled speeches by student leaders and staff.

Students tentatively requested August 1 as the date for a follow-up, in-person ceremony, where they could physically be handed their diplomas, but Green said it will depend on the status of the COVID-19 outbreak at the time.
